Good morning!

For the past two days I have not been able to send a report on the activities of our Italian GSE team. So now that it’s Sunday and they are on their way to Monroe County, I will give you my final report.

Thursday, Fourth Day: Thanks to the members of the Miami Club, our visitors went to the University of Miami on a tour that they enjoyed to the fullest. At noon, they made their third presentation to members of the Miami Club. In the afternoon, they were taken to the Fairchild Gardens, where after their visit, they were picked up by their new host families and went to dinner with them.

Friday, Fifth Day: this turned out to be the busiest day of their time with us. At 7:30 in the morning, they gave a presentation at the Key Biscayne Club. They then visited the Key Biscayne Police Station and the Lighthouse at Bill Boggs Park. Needless to say, our visitors showed what good shape they were in by climbing 109 steps to the top of the lighthouse. They visited the guardhouse where they saw a short film. After their noontime presentation at the Doral Club, their fifth, and later they went on a short shopping expedition to the Falls shopping center. They ended their day with dinner at Jo Burk ès house with their host families also in attendance.

Saturday, Sixth Day: After sleeping late (finally), they were picked up by members of the South Miami Club and taken to Dan and Penny McCrea’s home for a real American Bar B Q picnic with hotdogs and all the trimmings. After the picnic, they returned to their host families before leaving for an evening at the theatre. They say a musical at Actor’s Playhouse: “ I Love you Because…” that according to reports, they enjoyed immensely.

I want to thank all the members of the Dadeland-Pinecrest, South Miami, Doral, Key Biscayne, Miami and Coral Gables Clubs for their help and support. We of course are particularly grateful to the ten host families who helped to make our visitors’ stay in Miami the memorable occasion that it was. Thanks also to District for allowing me to participate in this wonderful international program that brings out the importance of the third branch of our four-way test: “will it build Good Will and Better Friendships”. This program clearly did that.

We all owe Yoli a tremendous round of applause….she pulled off a <near> miracle in organizing the first week on short notice and details. And used her excellent resources and contacts to make the week pretty special. The clubs stepped up to the plate and all the individuals who “make it happen” deserve a great pat on the back as well. Yoli – many, many thanks….I’ve been working with GSE for years and you did a terrific job, girlfriend….Marcy

Our visitors have arrived safely in Key West, and will attend a Super Bowl party at KW Sunrise past prez Janie Rodriguez's home this evening. They're intrigued at the notion that w ère all more interested in the TV commercials than in the game!

GB Rotary clubs officially welcome GSE participants

By ANGELO ARMBRISTER Freeport News Reporter Rotarians packed one of their usual meeting places yesterday to hear the cultural experiences of five Italian business professionals participating in a Rotary International exchange program. All three Rotary Clubs - Rotary of Grand Bahama Sunrise, Rotary Club of Lucaya and Rotary Club of Freeport - gathered at the Ruby Swiss Restaurant for a special meeting to officially welcome this year's Group Study Exchange members. The group is in Grand Bahama for a week and will engage in activities such as a fish fry night, a day with the dolphins, an island tour shopping trip and much more. The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25, and 40 in the early years of their professional lives. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's Rotary Clubs and way of life, observe their own vocations as practised abroad, develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas. Among the five Italian visitors are team leader Dr. Giovanni Marini, a neurosurgen once employed as Chief of the Neurosurgery division of the General Hospital Brescia. He was also a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Brescia. His team includes Lia Bettoni, a professional accountant with expertise in commercial law and a degree in economics. She made it abundantly clear yesterday that he is having a wonderful time in Grand Bahama and will share her experience with others when she leaves. Also part of the exchange team is Emanuele Santa Cruz. An Officer of the "Carabinieri" Corp commissioned in scuba diving and paratrooper, Cruz participated in the "Iraqi Freedom" Mission to Tallil, Iraq in 2004. Psychiatrist Laura Laffranc-hini is another member of the team, who has a particular interest in disease treatment modalities and therapies used, including pharmacological psychiatrists. Alice Zampa, a public relations officer and university graduate with a degree in modern languages (English and German) is the last member of the team. Enjoying her stay thus far, Zampa says she is only waiting for the weather to clear up so the she can go back on the beach. The group arrived on the island shortly after 5 p.m. last week Friday on American Eagle, where they were met by a team of Rotarians. Among them were Past Presidents Sonny Waugh, Donald Ward, Dr. Doswell Coakley and Phil Cart-wright. They joined their host families on Sunday after which they were on the go for events such as a "meet-and-greet" with Rotarians and a pool party at the Bell Channel Inn. On Monday, February 12, GSE members took part in Vocational Day, where their sponsors collected them from their host families for a day of activities. On Friday, the group will be taken on an island tour and shopping trip. They will also be treated to a barbecue at Past President David Long's house. A native 'Bahama Mamà cruise is slated for this Saturday and is designed to give the GSE group a little something extra before heading back to Florida on Sunday.
